The Read Programme

Phonics Class Singapore

Learning English is a valuable skill that can support children’s development and set them up for a lifetime of success.

Enrol today and give your child a headstart in English

You can’t learn English without sounding out the words, so phonics is the foundation of speaking English well. We teach children to pronounce and read words by learning specific and individual sounds, and correlating those sounds with letters — or groups of letters.

By learning the sounds that individual letters make, for example: “S,” “A” and “T,” students can start to put those sounds together to form whole words. Sometimes this is called blending. In this case, by sounding out the above letters individually, children learning English phonics will discover that they form the word “sat”.

At Jan & Elly English Language School and Enrichment Centre, we offer three levels of phonics, from Readiness to Advanced, that can accommodate young children of varying skill levels; ages 4 through 6. Throughout a phonics programme, young students will learn the fundamentals of letter sounds and pronunciation that will help them:

  • Improve their vocabulary and language.
  • Boost their reading skills.
  • Improve their pronunciation.
  • Build patience and concentration.
  • Improve word recognition.
  • Enhance their spelling abilities.
  • Exercise their brain.

Curious about which level is suitable for your child? Book a free phonics assessment to find out which programme would best suit your child. Then, sign up for a trial class to get a glimpse at our approach to phonics instruction.

Basic to advanced phonics for ages 4 to 6

Our Singapore-based Phonics lessons serve children of all experience levels and understanding. The earlier your child starts to grasp the basics of spoken English, the sooner they can move on to other programmes to solidify those skills, such as writing.

Level 1: Phonics Readiness (age 4)

In our Phonics Readiness programme, our teachers lay the foundation for effective phonics learning and make it easy — and exciting — to master the basics.

At this level, students will develop an understanding of the fundamental letter sounds that make reading possible. Your child will uncover the catchy sounds of each letter as they work their way through engaging class sessions. In Phonics Readiness, we magnify the world of letters so that students can learn every curve and line of the English alphabet, from A-Z — loud and clear.

Some of those activities include:

  • Individual letter sounds and introduction to the word family.
  • Sing songs from our Magic Letter Sounds Book to reinforce letter sounds.
  • Storytelling using animated digital books from well known and educational UK publishers.
  • Take home crafts to practise at home.
  • Working through our self-published Jan & Elly Phonics workbook 1.

Level 2: Phonics Intermediate (age 4-5)

By continuing to innovate our teaching methods and lesson plans, we can keep students interested. Gradual progression is important to engage students and encourage them to keep building their reading skills while ensuring they never feel overwhelmed.

In level two, students will build upon the skills they learned in Phonics Readiness. We will start to introduce more challenging activities where letters become words, words become sentences, and reading becomes a story, with activities such as:

  • Consonant blends, CVC word family and digraphs (e.g. cl, cr, at, ot, ch, sh respectively).
  • Taking home our school made ‘Little Sight Words’ booklet to practise reading sight words.
  • Sight Word Tales mini storybooks to practise reading fluency.
  • Working through our self-published Jan & Elly Phonics workbooks 2 & 3.

Level 3: Phonics Advanced (age 5-6)

Our Phonics Advanced programme starts to introduce more tricky and advanced letter sound combinations to help children read independently at their age level. Through these more advanced activities, there are lots of opportunities to practise fluency, word recognition, pronunciation and comprehension so your child will be ready for primary 1.

In this final phonics programme, your child will learn:

  • Diphthongs: ai, oa, ee.
  • Digraphs: kn, wr.
  • More consonant blends: spr, str.
  • Reading comprehension.
  • Reading fluency through sentences and storybooks.

Through these activities, students will develop their skills so that they can enter primary 1 with confidence.

The 5 basic phonics skills your child will learn

Phonics encompasses lots of skills that are good for kids to understand while learning English, but it’s important to focus on the essentials in early childhood. Throughout the duration of each of our programmes, your child will learn:

  • Letter sounds.
  • Short vowel patterns.
  • Long vowel words.
  •  Blending.
  • Tricky words.

The English language has some notably challenging rules that can be difficult for kids to understand. Rest assured, starting with the fundamentals and then working their way up to more advanced phonics lessons, young students will come away with a strong understanding of consonants and vowels. They’ll learn how different letters interact with each other to form whole words and, eventually, sentences.

Our approach ensures when your child has completed one level and is ready to move onto the next, that’s it’s a seamless transition, and they will be ready to tackle the new challenges confidently.

Parents Testimonials

Prior to joining Jan & Elly, Felise was learning Phonics from another centre for 6 months without much improvement in her reading abilities. With J&E,  Felise had improved by leaps and bounds in her reading within 3 months! Credit definitely goes to the teacher who is very engaging and encouraging! Felise is now in her 5th year with J&E and she is still looking forward to her weekly classes. As a parent, it is a joy to see my child looking forward to attending lessons.

Pei Jia Luo, mum of Felise Law

Both my children started English lessons at Jan & Elly learning phonics and reading. It has been a joy for them. Each time round, they look forward to their lessons. The teachers have been very approachable, especially their class teacher. The teacher has been patiently guiding my child (and myself) in his work, and at the same time, tries to understand his personality and work along with it.

I am so thankful to enroll my son at the Jan & Elly (Greenwich Branch). Jathan has been here for the past four years and all the four academic years were great for him. Jathan has excelled in his academic, special thanks to the teacher in creating an ideal atmosphere for Jathan to grow socially and academically. We as parents are very happy with our experience at Jan & Elly and would highly recommend this CPO program to anyone in the community looking for an English writing program for their child.
